| Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I'll meet you there. Rumi |
| When Saipan was introduced to me in the fall of 2000, synchronicity took over. I was graduating from Norwich University, I had worked at Springfield Hospital for fifteen years and I was ready for an adventure. My children were all married, my Dad was in good health and there was a family that wanted to rent my house. I have always felt at home near the sea so living on an island fifteen miles long and five miles wide appealed to me. The work that was offered was in my field and scope of practice; I wanted to be involved with different cultures and this was the ideal opportunity. I told my children that I wanted to celebrate my fiftieth birthday in an exotic place. Bali was perfect. I spent that morning at a spa in Ubud where I was treated to a "Javanese Lulur." This began with a luxurious scented oil massage, followed by exfoliation with yellow herbs and spices. After a quick rinse, I was slathered with yogurt to "stimulate and restore the pH balance." Then I was immersed in a tub filled with flower petals and served an Indonesian Jamu Elixir that smelled of cloves and cinnamon. I only wished my mother could have been treated as well when she was struggling to bring me into the world. Twelve years ago I had my astrological chart read and was told that I would work for a "foreign boss." The tape recording of that reading surfaced when I was packing for the move. The following pages are original photographs and musings of my time living and working around the Pacific Rim. Please enjoy my first attempt at web publishing. I welcome your comments and questions.
